In January 2022, Nahquil Lovest, a 20-year-old from Pleasantville, New Jersey, received a 10-year prison sentence for the 2019 shooting death of 15-year-old Naimah Bell in Atlantic City.
The incident occurred on July 25, 2019, when Lovest, who had just turned 18, was in a recently vacated apartment on Massachusetts Avenue with several other teenagers. While handling a firearm that had been recently loaded, Lovest discharged the weapon, fatally striking Bell in the head.
Lovest was initially charged with murder but later pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in January 2020 as part of a plea agreement. Under the terms of his sentence, he must serve at least 85% of the 10-year term before becoming eligible for parole, meaning he could be considered for release after approximately 8½ years.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Lovest received concurrent seven-year sentences for two separate weapons offenses and conspiracy to distribute a controlled dangerous substance. These sentences will not extend his overall time in prison.
The case has drawn attention to the dangers of firearms and the importance of responsible handling, especially among young individuals.
