Atlantic City has significantly bolstered its public safety measures through the establishment of a state-of-the-art surveillance center known as ACHILES—the Atlantic City Headquarters for Intelligence, Logistics, and Electronic Surveillance. Launched in early 2024, ACHILES operates around the clock, providing the Atlantic City Police Department (ACPD) with comprehensive monitoring capabilities across the city.
The center integrates feeds from over 3,000 cameras, encompassing both public and privately owned systems. These cameras are strategically positioned throughout Atlantic City, including the Boardwalk and various neighborhoods, offering extensive coverage to deter and address criminal activity. The surveillance infrastructure has expanded with the addition of 200 new cameras, each equipped with five lenses, enhancing the ability to monitor multiple angles simultaneously.
Chief James Sarkos emphasized the transformative impact of this technology, stating that it acts as a “force multiplier,” extending the reach of officers into areas where they are not physically present. The integration of real-time video feeds allows officers to respond more effectively to incidents, improving both response times and the efficiency of investigations.
In addition to surveillance, the ACPD has implemented systems like “ShotSpotter” to detect gunfire and “Mutualink,” which facilitates immediate communication between police and casino security teams. The department also encourages local businesses to participate in Project P.A.C.T. (Protecting Atlantic City Together), a camera-sharing initiative that further enhances the city’s surveillance network.
These advancements underscore Atlantic City’s commitment to leveraging technology to ensure the safety and security of residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
