In April 2020, the Diocese of Camden announced the permanent closure of five Catholic schools due to financial difficulties exacerbated by declining enrollment and insufficient fundraising. The affected schools were:
- Good Shepherd Regional Elementary School in
- Saint Joseph Regional Elementary School in Hammonton
- Cape Trinity Catholic Elementary School in Wildwood
- Wildwood Catholic High School in Wildwood
- Saint Joseph High School in Hammonton
Despite these closures, efforts were made to sustain Catholic education in the region. In June 2020, Wildwood Catholic High School and Cape Trinity Catholic Elementary School merged to form Wildwood Catholic Academy, serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade. This merger aimed to preserve Catholic schooling in the area and address the financial challenges faced by the individual institutions.
These developments highlight the Diocese of Camden’s ongoing efforts to adapt to changing demographics and financial realities while striving to maintain Catholic educational offerings in southern New Jersey.
