In April 2020, six fifth-grade students from Dr. Joyanne D. Miller School in Egg Harbor Township won a national competition hosted by Lenovo’s Future Academy Traveling Storybook. Their imaginative proposal, titled “What Will School Look Like in the Future?”, earned their school a $25,000 technology makeover. The team included Jason DeNafo, Ben Gettings, Madison Gladney, Brianna LaChina, Ana Mytnik, and Steve Slusarski, guided by teachers Kelly Hunt and Susan Slusarski.
The students envisioned three innovative tools: an Academic Assistance Wristband synced with each student’s schedule, Virtual Grade-Level Glasses replacing traditional textbooks with interactive 3D lessons, and a Student Learning Assistant Lenovo holographic tablet projecting lessons directly to students’ desks.
Their project was among ten nationwide finalists, and after public voting, Miller School was announced as the grand prize winner. A Lenovo representative praised the submission, stating, “Out of all the submissions, your school’s story for the future of education blew us—and the voters—away.”
This achievement highlighted the students’ creativity and the community’s support, as teacher Kelly Hunt noted, “We definitely couldn’t have won this without the fantastic community support.”
