In July 2019, 15-year-old Naimah Bell tragically lost her life in a shooting at an Atlantic City residence. The incident occurred when 18-year-old Nahquil Lovest, of Pleasantville, was handling a firearm he believed to be unloaded. According to Lovest’s defense attorney, the shooting was an accident that occurred while Lovest was playing with the gun.
However, during a detention hearing, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy argued that pointing a gun at someone’s head and pulling the trigger constitutes knowing murder. Lovest was subsequently charged with murder.
In January 2020, Lovest pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with the requirement to serve 85% of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
