In September 2017, a shooting occurred at the Brandywood Townhomes in Mays Landing, New Jersey, resulting in one fatality and three injuries. The incident began as a verbal altercation between two men, escalating into a physical confrontation. Matthew Gonzalez, 27, was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and two counts of aggravated assault.

The victims included Taufeeq Mitchell, who was killed, and Laquine Demby, Glynda Newman, and Tyjuan O’Neal, who were wounded. Gonzalez was convicted on eight counts, including witness tampering and attempted bribery, and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
