In June 2023, Alexander Schleider, a 57-year-old resident of Lakewood, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud. Schleider owned and operated durable medical equipment (DME) companies that supplied orthotic braces to Medicare and other health care beneficiaries without regard to medical necessity. He and his co-conspirators obtained prescriptions through kickbacks to marketing call centers, leading to losses of $21.7 million for Medicare and other programs. Additionally, Schleider fraudulently obtained $322,237 from the COVID-19 relief fund by misrepresenting his company’s activities.
