Pleasantville Community Unites to Support Family Displaced by Christmas Eve Fire

In December 2019, a fire devastated a Pleasantville family’s home, but the community’s swift support brought them hope during the holiday season.​

Incident Details:

  • Date & Time: Early morning on December 17, 2019.​
  • Location: 100 block of West Decatur Avenue, Pleasantville.​
  • Impact: The fire displaced 13 individuals from two families, including Leslie Murphy, her three grown children, and five grandchildren.

Community Response:

  • Immediate Assistance: Elder James Pressley, upon learning of the family’s plight, secured two adjoining hotel rooms for them. Lacking time to shop, he provided gifts intended for his own children, teaching his own kids the value of giving. Breaking AC
  • Pleasantville Fire Department: The department spread holiday cheer by organizing a Santa parade, driving Santa around the city to spread joy.

Family’s Gratitude:

Tamara Murphy expressed profound appreciation, stating, “I thought that was a wonderful thing.” She emphasized the importance of teaching children empathy and generosity.

Assistance Details:

The family received support from the Red Cross and local community members. Leslie Murphy, reflecting on their ordeal, said, “​I already was grateful that my family made it out OK.” She added that discussing the incident brings tears to her eyes. ​
