In July 2018, nine-year-old Jennifer Trejo tragically lost her life when a stray bullet struck her while she slept in her Bridgeton, New Jersey home. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on July 17, when gunfire from a nearby altercation on Elmer Street sent bullets into several vehicles and ultimately penetrated the rear wall of Trejo’s residence on Church Street. The stray bullet entered Trejo’s bedroom, hitting her as she slept.
Following a thorough investigation, authorities arrested three men in connection with the shooting:
- Michael L. Elliott, 25, of North Laurel Street, Bridgeton.
- Leroy Frazier III, 20, of Irving Avenue, Bridgeton.
- Charles Gamble, 18, of Salem, New Jersey.
The suspects face charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses. They were apprehended without incident: Frazier at his residence, Elliott at his workplace in Bridgeton, and Gamble at his home in Salem. Search warrants executed at the residences of Elliott and Frazier resulted in the recovery of at least one handgun, a substantial amount of suspected heroin, and a small quantity of crack cocaine.
Bridgeton Police Chief Michael Gaimari Sr. emphasized the importance of these arrests in reassuring the public that such actions are intolerable and that those responsible will be held accountable. He noted that while nothing can bring Jennifer back, removing the suspects from the community helps in delivering justice.
